The Winnipeg Jets have started off the new NHL season facing an early deficit.

Veteran defenceman Kevin Shattenkirk and 18-year-old rookie forward Mason McTavish both scored in the first period to give the Anaheim Ducks a 2-0 lead through 20 minutes at Honda Center.

Winnipeg outshot Anaheim 15-6 but couldn't beat goaltender John Gibson. They also went 0-for-2 on the power play.

The Jets are playing without top centre Mark Scheifele, who is serving the last of a four-game suspension he received in the playoffs last spring.

He will be back in the lineup when Winnipeg continues its season-opening road trip on Saturday in San Jose.
