It's been a happy homecoming for Andrew Copp, who scored from an odd angle to give the Winnipeg Jets a 1-0 lead in Detroit through one period of play.

The Michigan product fired a shot from behind the Red Wings net, banking it in off the head of goalie Alex Nedeljkovic for his ninth of the year at 5:41 of the opening frame.

Evgeny Svechnikov, playing against the team that drafted him in the first round, 19th overall, in 2015, had the first assist. And Dylan Samberg, making his NHL debut, got the second helper.

Shots are 10-9 for Winnipeg through 20 minutes.

The Jets are without 10 players for this game -- eight currently in COVID-19 protocol, and two others who are injured. This is their first game since a 7-1 loss last Thursday in Colorado.
