A standoff with city police in North Kildonan that began late Tuesday afternoon ended with a suspect being taken into custody after he was hit with a taser early Wednesday.
Police said the standoff, which began around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, was related to a serious domestic situation in an apartment on the 300 block of Sutton Avenue, and that a suspect had been violent in the past, while the woman inside may have been in danger. The suspect appeared to have tried to start a fire in the suite and was armed with knives and a machete.
Police said a fire was lit and fire crews were called in as the situation worsened and smoke filled the building. Residents had to flee to the warmth of transit buses outside.
At about 1:10 a.m., police got inside the suite, used the taser on a suspect and arrested him. A 30-year-old man faces 26 charges.
