Pallister calls for a redesign of CERB program

07/14/2020 12:43 PM

Premier Brian Pallister says Ottawa should redesign the Canadian Emergency Response Benefit so that it does not penalize Canadians wanting to return to work.

He said CERB is increasingly acting as a disincentive to work for some Canadians as it penalizes them financially for returning to work full time.

Pallister said Manitoba recognized the disincentive early on and created the Manitoba Job Restart Program to support those who voluntarily come off CERB and take full time work.

At a news conference, the premier suggested the federal government consider a phased reduction of CERB as workers return to their previous jobs or to new jobs.

In advance of an estimated 160,000 more Winnipeggers joining the ranks in the next two decades, the city will host virtual information and feedback meetings later this month on OurWinnipeg and Complete Communities, its two planning initiatives for sustainable growth.

OurWinnipeg is the city's 25-year development plan, which covers many areas, including how residents get around the city and the delivery of services; Complete Communities is a secondary plan looking at growth, development and land use.

The Zoom meeting on OurWinnipeg: Sustainable Development Goals is being held July 22 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., while the Zoom meeting dealing with Complete Communities: Growing Sustainably is running July 29 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Mother charged in collision that killed her five-year-old daughter

07/13/2020 1:30 PM

An investigation into a June 2019 collision that ended with one child dead has resulted in the arrest of her mother.

Police responded to a car accident at 1:40 p.m. on Dalhousie Drive between Pembina Highway and Rochester Avenue on June 19 of last year. It is believed that the driver, a 27-year-old female from Winnipeg traveling westbound, had attempted to pass a vehicle by driving into the opposite lane. The driver lost control of the vehicle, colliding with an eastbound driver.

The driver had three children in the car: a one-year-old and a four-year-old who were in child restraints, and a five-year-old female who was not. The two youngest children were sent to hospital in stable condition, but the five-year-old was in critical condition and later died of her injuries.

The driver, who is the mother of all three children, was driving with a class 5 learner license at the time but a supervising driver was not present. She was arrested Sunday and faces charges of careless driving causing death, driving while in the learner’s stage without a supervisor causing death, and driving a vehicle where a child is not properly restrained. She has been released on a Provincial Offences Act Appearance Notice.

It was later discovered to be a GeoCache — part of a GPS scavenger hunt activitiy.

Police ask the public be mindful of how geocaching items appear and to avoid disguising items to look unsafe.
