For 99 years, students have tested their melodic mettle at the annual Winnipeg Music Festival.
The first event in 1919 had just 38 classes; that number has since swelled to more than 500 — including everything from baroque French horn and Romantic classical guitar to pipe organ and community handbell ensemble — and welcomes competitors from across Manitoba, northwest Ontario and the northern United States.
This year’s festival got underway Feb. 26 and runs to March 19. Monday, choral competitors brought perfect harmony to Westminster United Church, while students of musical theatre took the songs of the Great White Way to the Winnipeg Art Gallery.
