Marlo Jurkowski will be appointed provincial commissioner of Girl Guides of Canada — Guides du Canada, Manitoba Council by chief commissioner Sharron Callahan on May 3. Debra Halligan, the current provincial commissioner, will have finished her five-year term by then. Jurkowski brings to her appointment a long commitment and dedication to Manitoba Girl Guides.

 

Barry W. Colby, ASQ fellow, ambassador and quality advocate with ASQ Canada, received congratulations from Gary Gehring of the ASQ board of directors on his special invitation for ASQ to participate with the Mental Health Commission of Canada’s network of ambassadors. ASQ recognizes the qualities of our lives and workplaces depend on the health, safety and well-being of a nation and require healthy, safe and secure citizens. The network provides an expert group of individuals who assist in sharing important messages about the work being done within their organizations and networks, providing valuable information and knowledge from their areas of expertise.

 

Nicholas Ruta, Kathryn Smith and Michael Taylor have recently completed the requirements for their full accredited assessor Manitoba designation. To achieve this designation, requirements include a combination of education, experience and adherence to a professional code of conduct.

Making Roots Montessori Centre Inc.and its co-founders, Kristen Shipman-Adams and Megan Turner, are pleased to announce Mary Ellen Smith has joined the centre in the position of director. Smith is an AMI-certified (Association Montessori Internationale) Montessori teacher. She holds a bachelor of education, a BA in mathematics and an ECE III and has 30 years of experience as a Montessori teacher and early-childhood educator.

 

AWARDS

The Association of Consulting Engineers of Manitoba honoured the following individuals at an awards gala celebrating 15 years of Awards of Excellence in engineering. William H. Brant, P. Eng. of WSP Canada Inc., was presented a Lifetime Achievement Award. The ACEC-MB also honoured Alana Gauthier, P. Eng. of WSP Canada Inc., with the Engineering Action Award and Kristen Poff, EIT of WSP Canada Inc., with the Rising Star Award. The ACEC-MB was also pleased to honour executive director Shirley Tillett for her 10 years of commitment and dedication to ACEC-MB and Peter Jordan for his 15 years as MC of the awards night.

 

Imperial Properties,a leading property-management firm serving Winnipeg and the surrounding areas, has received a Top Choice Award for the second year in a row. Imperial Properties won the 2014 Top Property Management award for the Winnipeg market, reflecting the firm’s level of excellence when it comes to residential, commercial and condominium property management. This year’s Top Choice Awards included more than 900 winners in 13 cities across Canada.

 

The Association of Consulting Engineering Companies Manitoba honoured excellence in engineering at its 15th annual awards gala. The Keystone Award for the project that best represented the program’s standards of excellence was presented to WSP Canada Inc. for the operating room/inter-operative magnetic resonance imaging scanner. Awards of Excellence were presented for projects submitted by AECOM Canada Ltd., Hatch Ltd., SMS Engineering Ltd., Stantec Consulting Ltd. and WSP Canada Inc. AECOM Canada Ltd., SMS Engineering Ltd. and Tetra Tech also received Awards of Merit.
