Mullen Group Ltd. has acquired Winnipeg-based Gardewine Group in a $172 million deal.
Included in the transaction is Gardewine North, Northern Cartage, Northern Deck, Northern Bulk and Northern Logistics.
The Calgary-based corporation also owns other Manitoba subsidiaries including Kleysen Group, Payne Transportation and Smook Contractors in Thompson.
Gardewine was part of Paul Albrechtsen’s trucking empire until he sold it to TriWest Capital Partners, a Calgary private-equity firm in 2008.
It was founded in 1952 and provides both regional less-than-truckload, truckload and specialized truckload services primarily in Manitoba and Ontario operating a fleet of approximately 660 trucks and 1,300 trailers through a network of 34 owned and leased terminals. The business employs more than 1,500 employees and 140 contract owner operators.
Mullen Group’s operations involve more than two dozen independently operated business units, including 10 in trucking and logistics and 16 in oilfield-related services.
