Red River College (RRC) has received a $1.75-million federal grant that will be used to build a new construction research centre on its Notre Dame Avenue campus.

The Centre for Building Envelop Performance will work with the local construction industry to develop innovative new ways of designing and constructing building envelopes. It will also conduct applied research and provide specialized education and training.

"Colleges play a key role in supporting innovation and business, and Red River College has been a leader in applied research for more than 10 years," David Rew, the college’s interim president and CEO, said in a written statement.

"This grant will help enhance our ability to serve Manitoba’s construction sector with advanced graduates and professional training, as well as foster innovation in a critical component of building design and construction," he added.

The grant, which will be allocated over the next five years under the federal College and Community Innovation (CCI) Program, was announced today in Winnipeg by Manitoba Conservative MP Lawrence Toet (Elmwood-Transcona) and Government House Leader Peter Van Loan.

"This important investment will support Red River College in partnering with construction industry leaders to offer specialized training and education to ensure a highly skilled workforce in Winnipeg and Manitoba," Toet said.

"The CCI Program is just one of our government’s numerous successful programs that give colleges and local businesses access to state-of-the-art equipment to help them succeed and innovate," Van Loan added.
