Above Security Inc., the company that acquired Winnipeg cyber-security firm Seccuris in February, has been sold to the Japanese electronics powerhouse Hitachi Systems Ltd.
Seccuris was founded by current Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce Chairman Michael Legary, in 1999 and built it into one of the leaders in the growing cyber-security field.
By the time it was sold to Above Security, Legary Seccuris was providing services, including actively monitoring data security, to customers that included many governments in Canada and Fortune 500 companies.
It grew to several offices across Canada and in the U.S., in addition to its Winnipeg head office with about 80-employees where its monitoring operation centre is based.
Above Security, which is based in Montreal, also provides similar kinds of monitoring services.
The terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
Legary said in a tweet this morning, "It’s been one heck of a ride, building a company."
Hitachi’s acquisition of Above Security is scheduled to close in October.
In a release, Hitachi said the deal will strengthen its managed security service business and its security consulting business in Japan, North America, Europe, India and Southeast Asia.
Hitachi says it wants to address the challenges facing society in general, and its customers, by providing targeted solutions with a combination of products, services and IT.
Ray Georges Chehata, president and CEO of Above Security, said "By joining the Hitachi Systems Group we have found a global partner that embraces our vision and will allow us to continue to run as a separate entity."
