A vintage clothing and costume store is searching for a new home after a substantial rise in its Exchange District rent.
Ragpickers Anti-fashion Emporium is set to leave its McDermot Avenue location at the end of January.
Kristen Andrews has run the store for 23 years and said the building owner increased the rent substantially. Today marks the last day Ragpickers will have access to its second-floor bookstore and performance space since Andrews said the building owner has other plans for the space.
She said the Atomic Centre, a gallery and music venue, will temporarily house Ragpickers' 10,000 books, and Rudolph Rocker will provide a place for the Flaming Trolleys Community Orchestra to perform.
Andrews said Ragpickers has moved seven times within the Exchange District since 1984. She said she is searching for an alternative location within the neighbourhood.
"We're looking for a new location. We've been good long-term tenants in the Exchange," Andrews said.
