Spiring named chairman
WINNIPEG'S Charlie Spiring has been elected chairman of the board for the Investment Industry Association of Canada (IIAC).
Spiring, who is vice-chair and director of National Bank Financial, was unanimously elected to the post at the IIAC's recent annual meeting in Toronto.
Spiring said in a written statement that he, his fellow board members and the IIAC will continue to respond to the ever-increasing pace of regulatory proposals, arguing for cost-effective and accountable regulation and advocating good public policy on behalf of the association's 168 member firms.
"The need for a strong industry association and voice for the Canadian securities industry to speak out constructively on the regulatory process and on public policy has never been greater," he added.
Rona selling division
MONTREAL -- Struggling hardware retailer Rona is moving ahead with the planned sale of its commercial and professional division for $215 million.
The operations, which focused on plumbing, heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, will be acquired by EMCO subsidiary Talisker Plumbing Corp., the company announced Thursday. Rona created the division when it acquired commercial trades supplier Noble in 2007.
