Health care tops ranking of job openings in Manitoba

Retail sector second due to high turnover

They've been deemed the hottest of the hot for local job-seekers., a Montreal job aggregator that tracks online job ads across Canada, has compiled a list of the Top Five industries in Manitoba in which there are job openings.

Heading the industry list is health care/medical, with approximately 2,100 openings, followed by retail, professional services, public sector and food production/service.

And the employer with the highest number of job openings in the health care/medical industry is the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, with 254, found.

Company co-founder Maxime Droux said it's not surprising the health care/medical industry heads the list in Manitoba.

It's like that pretty much across the country.

He explained that with an aging population, the demand for health care and medical services continues to grow. And that usually means a need for more workers.

"Over the last two years we've seen continuous growth in the number of health-care-type jobs. And with all of the baby boomers retiring... we will keep seeing this trend going forward for the next five to 10 years," he said.

On top of that, health-care organizations have become adept at getting the word out about their job openings, he said.

Not only do they advertise them on their own websites, they often post them on popular job boards and with private-placement agencies -- the three places regularly monitors.

The WRHA said in an email it's difficult to corroborate the number. It noted there currently are about 28,000 employees working within the region.

They include positions for midwives, health-care aides, scheduling clerks, cooks, home-care support workers, nurses and doctors.

Droux said it's also not surprising to see retail and food production/service, which includes restaurant operators as well as food processors, on the list.

Both industries typically experience high staff turnover.

In the case of retail, there's also been an influx of U.S.-based restaurant chains into Canada in the last few years, he said, which has created many new employment opportunities.

Droux noted it's not just sales associate and cashier positions that are available. Other examples are project managers, store managers, inventory personnel, merchandisers, pharmacy assistants, web-app developers and business analysts.
