The new 115,000-square-foot production facility is located on the site of a former warehouse that had been converted into a high-security provincial courthouse.
The courthouse was built to try 35 people accused of being Manitoba Warriors gang members, but was never used because the accused struck deals with the Crown to plead guilty to various drug offences in exchange for having some other charges dropped.
The new facility replaces Weston's aging bakery at 666 Elgin Ave., which the province has purchased. The land will be made available to the Health Sciences Centre for its new women's hospital.
Weston had considered building the new bakery and distribution centre in Regina. But the City of Winnipeg offered it a $200,000 economic development incentive grant to keep the facility and its 121 full-time jobs in Winnipeg.
