OTTAWA -- A group committed to reviving the long-form census is trying to make it an issue in two federal byelection races.
The Save the Census campaign has paid for a radio ad to run in a Manitoba riding and is distributing flyers in a Toronto-area riding.
Both will choose their new MPs on Monday.
The group, which includes individuals connected to community social development groups, wants the Conservative government to reverse last summer's decision to replace the mandatory long-form questionnaire with a voluntary survey.
They are urging voters in the two ridings to back the candidate most likely to fight for the return of the mandatory long questionnaire.
Their radio ad playing in the Manitoba riding of Dauphin-Swan Lake-Marquette features the used-car salesman-type voice of a man trying to sell the "brand-new 2011 census." A woman tells him it's a "lemon."
"But it only costs $30 million more than the old model, how can you beat that?" The man's voice pleads.
