PM TRUDEAU TO ARRIVE IN WASHINGTON TODAY FOR THREE-DAY VISIT
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau begins his first prime ministerial visit to the U.S. today — a visit that will also feature the first White House state dinner for a Canadian in 19 years. Climate change and border crossings are expected to be key topics when Trudeau meets with U.S. President Barack Obama.
FATHER OF TERRY FOX DIES OF CANCER
Rolland Fox, the father of iconic Marathon of Hope runner Terry Fox, has died at the age of 80. A statement posted on the Terry Fox Foundation website said the family patriarch known to friends and family as Rolly died on Tuesday afternoon, having been diagnosed in January with lung cancer.
ENVIRONMENT MINISTER MCKENNA URGED TO REJECT LNG REPORT
A letter signed by more than 130 scientists is urging federal Environment Minister Catherine McKenna to reject what they calls a "flawed" environmental draft report for the proposed $36 billion Petronas-backed liquefied natural gas plant in British Columbia. The say the report is "scientifically flawed and represents an insufficient base for decision-making."
AILING MP BELANGER TO TAKE SPEAKER'S CHAIR
Veteran Liberal MP Mauril Belanger will preside over the House of Commons as honorary Speaker today. Belanger can no longer speak due to Lou Gehrig's disease and will conduct his Speaker duties with the aid of a tablet computer, which converts text to audio. Belanger was seen a front-runner for the post of Speaker last fall but was forced to withdraw after being diagnosed with ALS in late November.
TRAVIS VADER TRIAL CONTINUES IN EDMONTON.
The trial of a man accused of killing two Alberta seniors continues today in Edmonton. Travis Vader, 44, is accused of first-degree murder in the deaths of Lyle and Marie McCann, who headed out on a road trip to B-C six years ago and were never seen again. The Crown has suggested Vader was a crystal meth user who killed the couple because he was desperate for money. The defence is questioning whether the McCanns are actually dead.
CENTRAL BANK TO ANNOUNCE INTEREST RATE
The Bank of Canada is expected to make its latest announcement on interest rates later today. And while there is little expectation of a change to its overnight rate target, economists will be looking for any clues as to how the central bank views the economy.
B.C. HISTORIAN CELEBRATES WOMEN ON BANK NOTES
The portrait of an iconic Canadian woman is set to appear on a new series of bank notes, and a British Columbia historian says it's about time. Merna Forster has been writing letters to politicians and Bank of Canada governors for years saying that it is unacceptable not to have a single bill featuring the image of a female figure from the country's history.
