SUMMARY:Exploration of Contentment\, Solo Exhibition by Jordan Miller
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: September 20\, 1-4pm; artist talk 2pm.\nMeet the Artist: October 17\, 1-4pm.\nRegular hours: Mon-Wed\, 10am to 4pm; Thurs 10-7pm. \nAn inner voice emerged as Exploration of Contentment unfolded. Intuitive abstraction came to life. Paintings developed personalities through colour\, line\, and mark-making. \nLight and dark tones appeared like shifting emotions\, similar to the way a person processes challenges or reflects on past conversations. Discovering forgiveness\, moving beyond identifiable loss\, a contemplative yet positive tension exists. Layers are built up and swiped away. Vibrant\, subdued\, and translucent colours create visual harmony. \nThe quiet solitude of creating is both restorative and energizing\, providing a fulcrum of balance within an abstracted mind filled with noise. \nExploration of Contentment reflects on resilience and acceptance\, inviting viewers to consider their own relationship with the subtle ways contentment can coexist with uncertainty\, change\, and the complexities of modern life. \n(see “blog” at www.jordanlmiller.com for longer description)

SUMMARY:East European Genealogical Society - Passing It Forward
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Dave Obee \nDescription:\nWe’ve been working on our family history for years\, if not decades\, and we know that can’t go on forever. We don’t want all our work to go to waste\, so we need to find a way to make it accessible for others. It would be even better if we could find younger relatives to carry on our research. How do we inspire them\, so they share out passion for family history? And then\, how do we get their knowledge up to speed so any research they do will be accurate and reliable? This session with Dave will give a few ideas so we can find someone in the next generation\, or the generation after that\, and pass the torch to them with confidence. \nDave Obee is a Canadian journalist\, historian\, and genealogical researcher with more than 50 years of experience. He is the Editor and Publisher of the Times Colonist and the author of a dozen books\, including major works on Canadian history\, libraries\, immigration\, and genealogy. Dave has delivered over 700 presentations across Canada\, the U.S.\, and Australia\, and his contributions have earned honours such as an honorary doctorate from the University of Victoria\, the Sovereign Medal for Volunteers\, and the Bill Good Award. \nFormat: Zoom only meeting. Members are welcome to this Zoom event that begins at 7 p.m. CT. A Zoom link to join online (and receive a link to the recording) will be sent to EEGS members only. If you’re interested in attending online\, please join. We would be happy to have you! You can learn more about the benefits of membership on our Become a Member page.

SUMMARY:Democracy Live
DESCRIPTION:Stories Shaping Change\nIn a country of many stories\, how do we build the civic muscle to stay united? \nDemocracy is a verb\, not a noun. Its health relies on civic fitness: our ability to navigate conflict\, listen deeply\, and act together. Like physical fitness\, it isn’t built in a single election\, but through repeated practice. \nCanada is shaped by multiple stories and identities. Our democracy grows stronger when we let these shared narratives unite rather than divide us. \nHosted by The Walrus and DXC+ by DemocracyXChange\, Democracy Live is an inaugural\, one-day gathering to celebrate civic participation and build civic fitness. The summit brings together residents\, artists\, organizers\, and community leaders to address one central question: \nIn a country of many stories\, how do we strengthen democratic participation and unity through action in Manitoba and across Canada? \nGrounded in local realities\, the summit connects Winnipeg and Manitoba to the national democratic conversation. Through inspiring speakers and participatory workshops\, we will tackle timely topics such as economic sovereignty\, diversity\, housing security\, and more\, with a focus on how we can work together to drive democratic action. \nJoin us in Winnipeg or online this November to share your story\, build civic fitness\, and help shape the future of our democracy.
