Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 26/4/2008 (5177 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.
The half-page article in Saturday's edition dedicated to the transporting of medical supplies to foreign destinations provided great insight to how ordinary individuals can make a significant difference in the world when provided the opportunity and the means.
It would be beneficial for your readers to know that they too can be part of this effort by simply contacting a local Winnipeg group: International HOPE Canada Inc. at (204) 774-1102 or e-mail: info@internationahope.ca.
The website may be found at www.internationalhope.ca.
International HOPE Canada Inc. is an all-volunteer organization that has been doing similar work to that profiled in the article -- and more -- since 2001.
HOPE maintains a west-end Winnipeg warehouse of surplus medical and surgical supplies and equipment ready and waiting for delivery to countries in need. In addition to packing suitcases for individual travellers (and we often supply the suitcase too), International HOPE has sent container loads of goods to developing countries around the globe. In fact, as your readers were perusing the Travel pages of Saturday's paper, numerous volunteers, from Winnipeg's Filipino community and HOPE, were busy filling a container with beds, hospital and surgical supplies, and other equipment. The container is now on its way to the Philippines thanks to that enthusiastic community support. Just a few weeks ago, Winnipeg's Ukrainian community was involved in a similar effort -- for the fifth time!
HOPE's newsletters are available on-line and highlight recent deliveries, by suitcase full and container load, to Tanzania, Nigeria, Ethiopia, El Salvador, Peru, Ukraine, St. Vincent, Uganda, Congo, Senegal, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Guatemala, and Cuba.
Perhaps at some time in the future there will be space for a story telling how our local citizens heading off to a developing country can carry medical supplies to those in need and enlightening readers to the work by International HOPE volunteers here in Winnipeg.
With kind regards, International HOPE Canada Inc.
