PIZZERIA Gusto, closed after its chef was fired and staff walked out in solidarity, will reopen soon, said co-owner Bobby Mottola.

The hip Academy Road eatery closed Friday after Chef Scott Bagshaw was fired following exuberantly profane comments he made to a Winnipeg writer about a "two-day bender" he had while working in Australia almost eight years ago.

"We’re planning to reopen," said Mottola, who owns the restaurant with his brother Don. "We want to close this chapter and move on."

Mottola didn’t say when the restaurant might be back in business.

In an upcoming book about Winnipeg chefs called The Last Crumb, written by Red River College student Rhéanne Marcoux, Bagshaw, 36, details a party romp he went on with his then-boss after working 23 straight 16-hour days. Bagshaw went to party after party for two days straight over a weekend, without sleep, before returning to work on the Monday. The story happened in 2002, while he was working at Monsoon Vietnamese Bistro in Australia.

Mottola said the story, along with others in the two-page chapter, doesn’t fit the integrity and character of the eatery.
