THE Chief Peguis Trail extension will open on Friday, allowing motorists a new means of driving between Henderson Highway and Lagimodiere Boulevard.

The $109-million road is expected to be open to motor vehicle traffic shortly before noon upon completion of a ribbon-cutting ceremony involving Mayor Sam Katz, Premier Greg Selinger, Elmwood-Transcona MP Lawrence Toet and North Kildonan Coun. Jeff Browaty.

Ottawa contributed $25 million to the project and the province contributed $9 million. The city is covering the rest of the tab through a public-private partnership with construction consortium DBF2 Ltd.

Along with the new section of road, the project includes an underpass at Rothesay Street, a bike-and-pedestrian bridge at the Northeast Pioneers Greenway and street closures on Raleigh Street (between Donwood Drive and Gilmore Avenue) and DeVries Avenue (near Springfield Road).

During the next 20 years, the city plans to extend the thoroughfare west from Main Street to McPhillips Street and eventually Route 90, as well as east from Lagimodiere to the Perimeter Highway.
