The allegations against Trakalo have not been proven in court and he's presumed innocent until found guilty.
The crash took place on Charleswood Road at around 3 a.m. Sept. 4. Witnesses said the vehicle careened through ditches, smashed into a tree and damaged a parked van before coming to a stop.
Witnesses also said the driver of the vehicle crawled out of the crashed Oldsmobile Alero with a gash over one eye and kept asking to use a phone to call his father, whom he identified as a police officer.
After the victim made a call from a resident's cordless phone, a man in a truck pulled up and took the victim from the scene despite their protests, witnesses said. The older man returned and spoke with officers a few minutes later. At no time did the father identify himself to them as a police officer, witnesses said.
At the time, police would not confirm that the former officer took his son from the scene, only that he is a retired member of the police service. They promised a thorough investigation into the incident.
On Thursday, Const. Jacqueline Chaput said their investigation is still ongoing.
There's some evidence that Trakalo needed urgent medical attention due to a pre-existing medical condition, witnesses said.
Police spokesman Const. Jason Michalyshen confirmed as much, and added it's common for police to deal with medical issues first if someone has been injured.
