The world-class Experimental Lakes Area and the agency that runs it has been granted charitable status.
That means Manitobans can now get a tax receipt when they help fund ecosystem research at the International Institute for Sustainable Development-Experimental Lakes Area (IISD-ELA).
The IISD says the move will help it to ramp up fundraising.
The research station and its 58 lakes in western Ontario recently received a donation of $1 million that will help post-secondary students access research opportunities.
After federal budget cuts nearly mothballed the unique freshwater research project, the IISD took over operation of the lakes with the help of the Ontario and Manitoba governments.
