Thousands of Winnipeg Folk Festival fans had their first peek at the new Festival Village and Tower when the gates at Birds Hill Provincial Park opened this afternoon.

The second phase of the festival's $6-million redevelopment was officially opened by Premier Greg Selinger and Saint Boniface MP Shelly Glover.

Then fans streamed in to stake their claim on the grass at the mainstage for opening night with Oh My Darling, Avett Brothers and City and Colour.

The traditional running of the tarps took place at the main stage Wednesday afternoon shortly after the opening of the 40th Winnipeg Folk Festival at Birds Hill Park.
