Six-year-old Ella Howe takes a close look at the gold medal won by Jill Officer at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.
Olympic gold-medal winner Jill Officer is getting a park named after her in North Kildonan.
The protection and community services committee this morning agreed to rename the small park in front of River East arena – known only by a few individuals as River East park – to Jill Officer Park.
The name change was made at the request of the area community committee.
Officer, a member of the championship Jennifer Jones curling team, grew up in the same neighbourhood where the park is located and her parents still live in the area.
The park is located on Rothesay Street, in front of the River East arena.
Since returning from the Sochi Olympics as champions, Officer and the other members of the Jones team were singled out for their accomplishment by Mayor Sam Katz, who awarded them the city’s Outstanding Achievement Award medallions.
An official park renaming ceremony will likely be held in May or June.
