The province's chief medical examiner, Dr. Thambirajah Balachandra, today called inquests into the suicide deaths of three people who were either in hospital or jail when they took their lives.
On Oct. 2, 2013, a 16-year-old girl from Souris died in hospital after attempting suicide four days earlier at the Brandon Correctional Centre. Her name can't be released under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. The girl was found in her cell in the correctional centre's youth unit hanging from a ceiling vent. She had a history of suicide attempts and was a ward of Dakota Ojibway Child and Family Services. The date and location of the inquest will be determined later.
On Sept. 10, 2013, Michael Winsor, 22, of Cambridge, Ont., died while he was involuntarily a patient at Health Sciences Centre. Winsor had apparently travelled to Winnipeg by bus from North Battleford, Sask. and was apprehended Sept. 8 by Winnipeg police and taken to Health Sciences Centre for a psychiatric assessment. Two days later, while in the care of the hospital, he was found hanging in the shower room. The date and location of the inquest has not yet been determined.
On Nov. 23, 2013, Devon Sampson, 34, died at Stony Mountain Institution. He was found in his cell, partially suspended by a shoelace around his neck. Resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful. The date and location of the inquest has yet to be determined.
