The first phase of a much-needed facelift at the Misericordia Health Centre is all but complete.
The Wolseley-area healthcare facility announced its new Maryland Building is officially open this morning. The centre will house the new Buhler Eye Care Centre, including a new University of Manitoba Ophthalmology Residency program, and a diagnostic imaging laboratory. The new two-storey facility will also contain a health centre for seniors, which is slated to open later this year.
"The state-of-the-art Maryland building reflects the compassionate patient-centred care we provide," Misericordia president and chief executive officer Rosie Jacuzzi said in a statement. "It’s bright, spacious and is already demonstrating improvements in patient flow and satisfaction.
"Misericordia’s phased redevelopment is designed with the future of care in mind. Our specialized programs reflect a move towards community-based health care, while taking into account our increasingly aging population."
The province invested $38-million in the $43-million project, with the other $5-million raised by the Misericordia Health Centre Foundation.
Phase two of the redevelopment includes the demolition of the 1906 Sherbrook building and the creation of a new structure, providing a link between the various buildings at the healthcare complex. The new Sherbrook building will include a 30-foot main entrance atrium that will showcase historical artifacts and a chapel.
