An RCMP officer from Arborg has been charged with sexual assault and sexual interference on a nine-year-old victim, Brandon police say.
RCMP asked the Brandon Police Service to lead the investigation, even though the suspect is from Arborg and the offence allegedly happened in Ashern. Both of those communities are in the Interlake.
Brandon police took over the investigation on Saturday, Sept. 27, a day after the alleged assault. They were assisted by the RCMP Winnipeg Major Crimes Unit.
On Sunday, a 55-year-old officer was charged with sexual assault and sexual interference. Brandon police confirm the accused is a 26-year veteran of the RCMP who was not on duty at the time of the alleged assaults.
He has been released from custody on appropriate, police-imposed conditions to appear in court in Ashern on Nov. 19.
Police say the suspect's name will not be released to protect the ongoing investigation.
