Donnie H.J. Benham will run on behalf of the Green party in the upcoming provincial byelection, the party announced Thursday at an event in Memorial Park.
Benham, son of former city councillor Donald Benham (a representative of River Heights-Fort Garry from 2004 to 2006) will run in the Sept. 4 byelection, going up against Brian Pallister, official leader of the Manitoba Progressive Conservative Party, Liberal candidate Bob Axworthy and NDP candidate Brandy Schmidt.
Benham, 24, said his age and relative inexperience won't be an issue; however, there's work to do to gain public support for his party as a whole, he said.
"Certainly, I think the biggest thing I have going against me is the people's public perception of the Greens; that we are nothing but a bunch of Birkenstock-wearing hippies," said Benham. "I am here to tell you that it's not true. We are here to support small businesses and we are here to support accountability and government."
Benham said his complete platform will be revealed at a later date.
