THE Canadian Taxpayers Federation is demanding the city release the updated cost of the new football stadium slated for the University of Manitoba.

The stadium was projected to cost $115 million but the deal's partners -- Creswin, the city, province, the University of Manitoba and the Winnipeg Football Club -- have been wrestling for the last several months with the question of cost overruns.

Creswin is responsible for those overruns, but developer David Asper has floated the notion of an altered stadium design that might not include a canopy because projected costs are rising.

Bids to build the stadium were due late last month and Asper said it will take several more weeks to go through the submissions.

CTF prairie director Colin Craig said that's not fast enough. "The sooner voters know the true cost, the sooner they can grill council candidates on the matter and take their positions into consideration when voting."

Mayor Sam Katz said he has not been in contact with Asper. He repeated his pledge to hold another council vote on the stadium if the project changes.
