An 18-year-old man who was hiking in the Whiteshell area was found dead Friday near the Mantario Trail after emergency personnel responded to a distress signal from a personal satellite messenger device.

RCMP said the man was a hiker from East St. Paul who had been dropped off with supplies at the southern trail head near Caddy Lake earlier that morning.

Coordinates from the signal, received at about 4 p.m., placed the signal near a section of the Mantario Trail. A helicopter in the area that flew to the coordinates to search for the man saw him not moving on the ground at about 6 p.m., but the helicopter could not land due to the terrain.

Mantario Hiking Trail extends 60 kilometres between the south trailhead off Provincial Road 312 east of Caddy Lake and the north trailhead on the north shore of Big Whiteshell Lake. The Manitoba Naturalists Society created the trail in cooperation with the Manitoba Parks Branch the early 1970's. It is the longest such trail in the Canadian Shield in Western Canada.
