The Manitoba government has released more details about a new kindergarten-to-Grade 5 school to be built in Seven Oaks School Division.
The 56,423-square-foot facility will be located on Templeton Avenue, east of Pipeline Road, and have space for 450 students.
The Winnipeg school will be designed so it can be expanded to accommodate 600 pupils. It will include a child-care centre for 20 infants and 54 preschoolers and "flexible" child-care space to accommodate an additional 30 children.
Also in the plans: 15 regular classrooms and kindergarten rooms; a music room; a science, technology, electronics and math (STEM) lab; life-skills and resource teaching and guidance suites; an English-as-an-additional-language room; a library; and a gymnasium.
"This school will relieve pressure on the existing schools in (the) Maples and Amber Trails, and support increasing enrolment in this rapidly growing corner of the city," Education Minister Ian Wishart told a news conference on Thursday at the site of the proposed school.
The new school is currently in the design phase and is expected be ready for tender in December. The province expects construction to be completed for the beginning of the school year in September 2020.
The building will also be energy efficient, with a LEED Silver rating, and feature "enhanced" indoor air quality, the government said.
