The search for a nine-year-old boy who is believed to have entered the Red River near the Louise Bridge continues today by members of the Winnipeg police underwater search and recovery unit.
Darius Bezecki went missing after he is believed to have entered the north side of the river, west of the bridge, Winnipeg police said.
The boy, whose family lives in the area, was riding his bike with his siblings and a friend Friday.
Around 4:30 p.m., emergency officials got a call that the boy was in the water.
The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service led the search Friday afternoon before turning the scene over to the Winnipeg Police Service.
Police continued searching with its dive team, police boat and drone as the sun set Friday night.
Winnipeg Police Service spokesman Const. Jay Murray said he spoke briefly with the boy’s family after 9 p.m.
"I can’t imagine what they’re feeling at this time; I can’t even begin to imagine that. Incredibly tough... a very tragic set of circumstances, and I think it’s going to tug at the hearts of every parent and everyone in Winnipeg," Murray said.
Police released Darius’s name and photo Friday night at his family’s request, in case the boy was able to get out of the water and someone might have seen him. Police are asking residents who live along the Red River to keep an eye on the water or check video surveillance that may have captured the incident.
"We’re hoping for a positive outcome in this incident. We have to explore every possibility.
There’s certainly a chance that the child had exited the water at some point," Murray said.
The search was suspended until today after it started to get dark.
"One thing that poses a challenge is when night hits. It’s incredibly hard to search at nighttime," he said.
