A book chain has forged a special link between students from École Dieppe and their new neighbourhood library.
About 120 students from École Dieppe, a kindergarten-to-Grade 6 French-immersion milieu school in Charleswood, handed over the last of the books from the old Charleswood Library to the new Charleswood Library by handing them down a student-populated book chain outside the buildings Monday.
"We had this huge chain with all the grade 5s and 6s from École Dieppe and we passed most of the books from the old library to the new library," said Eric Havmand, a Grade 6 student who participated in the book chain.
"I found it kind of exciting because we're (some) of the first people to help out at the new library."
The book chain became a community-building activity for the students who were able to be part of a historic day in their neighbourhood.

"I thought it was fun to help the new library and get it started with the books," said Grade 6 student Niah Syrnyk.
The longtime partnership between Charleswood Library and École Dieppe is now even stronger due to the proximity of the new library at 4910 Roblin Blvd.
The new Charleswood Library is located next to the school.
"Somebody counted the steps between our school and the new public library and there are only about 120 steps. It's just outside our door so it feels like it's in our own backyard," said Martine Blanchet, the librarian at École Dieppe who organized the book chain with the public library branch manager.
"We thought it (the book chain) would be a nice ending ceremony to close the old library and bring everything to the new library and we wanted the students to be a part of that."
Blanchet said École Dieppe students and staff team up throughout the school year with the Charleswood Library for the I Love To Read events and students frequently visit the branch.
Mayor Brian Bowman, on hand to welcome students to the new Charleswood Library location, told students he felt a connection to the library as well, since he grew up in Charleswood.
