Two dogs died in a fire Wednesday morning that destroyed a home on Wellington Crescent.
Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic crews rushed to the 800 block of Wellington Crescent after receiving an alert from a monitored residential fire alarm at about 9:30 a.m.
Deputy chief Russ Drohomereski said crews initially went into the riverside house to battle the blaze that started in the basement, but that quickly changed.
"With the design of the house, we had problems finding the access to the basement," Drohomereski said. "When they found it, the floor started to become compromised, so it was no longer safe to be inside.
"We went into a defensive strategy outside."
Firefighters were still at the scene near the intersection of Wellington Crescent and Waverley Street in the afternoon to extinguish any smouldering remains while heavy equipment demolished what was left standing. The street was closed to traffic in both directions.
The cause of the fire had not yet been determined, Drohomereski said, adding the homeowner was at the scene.
Two firefighters suffered minor leg injuries.
