Two young women are dead after a speeding SUV hit a tree in Portage la Prairie early Sunday morning.
The 22-year-old driver and her 20-year-old passenger, both from Portage la Prairie, were pronounced dead at the scene, RCMP said in a news release.
The deadly crash happened at about 2:20 a.m. on Crescent Road West at the intersection of 4th Street Southwest.
Investigators believe the SUV was travelling westbound on Crescent Avenue at a high rate of speed when it crossed over the centre line and struck the tree.
There were several witnesses to the crash as well as many who heard it and went to assist, said RCMP spokesman Sgt. Paul Manaigre.
It was unknown if alcohol was a factor or if either were wearing seat belts at the time of the collision, the RCMP press release said.
Officers from the Portage la Prairie detachment and a forensic collision reconstructionist continue to investigate.
The women's families have been notified, said Manaigre.
"We will not be releasing the names of the deceased."
