Since 2015, the final day of the August long weekend has been known as Terry Fox Day in honour of the Winnipeg-born athlete and cancer research activist. This year, the holiday falls on August 7.
Formerly known as civic holiday, the first Terry Fox Day was celebrated after a local radio host began a social media campaign on Fox’s birthday in 2014 in support of the name change.
Three days later, the provincial government said it would introduce legislation to recognize the first Monday in August as Terry Fox Day.
In 1980, Fox began a Marathon of Hope to raise money for cancer research. Despite having his right leg amputated 15 cm above his knee, he ran for 143 days till the spread of his cancer forced him to stop in Thunder Bay, Ont. He died nine months later.
Since his death, more than $600 million has been raised for cancer research in his name.
The Free Press will not publish a print edition Monday, but readers can visit winnipegfreepress.com for the latest news and information.
