Love Letters to Manitoba

Manitoba is about the people

I am often asked, “Why haven’t you left Manitoba for a major city like, NYC or Paris?”  The answer is simple: they don’t have what we have here. It took me a long time to figure that out, but when I did, I knew that Manitoba would be my home for many moons to come.  Did I have dreams of moving away from our province? Sure did, but it wasn’t until I started travelling that I realized just how good we have it here.
I’ve worked in major cities across North America, from NYC to LA to Toronto to Vancouver and all along I found an emptiness to the air that made me long for home.  Life has taken me to Europe, Australia, and Asia and still nothing felt quite like Manitoba.  You see our great province is not only a well rounded place to live, it’s also home to wonderful people.

It is the people of Manitoba that really make it what it is. We are grounded, kind, and generous people.  There is a sense of community that you don’t get when travelling abroad.  It’s almost as though the rest of the world wants something from you, it’s as though they only want to talk to you because they can gain something from you.  In Manitoba I find the opposite, I encounter people who are generally curious about who you are as a person, what makes you tick and what makes you happy.  In Manitoba you find generosity and kindness, you find community and hope.  In Manitoba you find Diversity.

Diversity is one of my favourite things about Manitoba, our weather is extremely diverse, from the hot dry summers to the bitterly cold winters, our temperature fluctuates more than almost any other city on earth.  This extreme temperature change brings with it an energy that few get to experience, it’s a honour to get to see the vast changes that these temperatures create.  One of my favourite things is the ice crystals which form in the middle of winter or the sun dogs which almost make it look like we have three suns.  Or how about laying under the stars in middle summer in a remote cabin location where there is no light pollution inhibiting the view of the galaxy?  If you’re lucky, the northern lights will dance spectacularly which will leave you in awe.  These are the miracles that few in the world are able to see and yet we get to experience them every year.  Each season brings with it a new miracle; in fall we see the beautiful changing of the leaves and in spring we see the birth of tulips and flowers.  We are truly lucky to experience all the seasons and I believe it has something to do with why Manitobans take nothing for granted.

Not only are we diverse in weather, we are also extremely diverse in cultures.  Manitoba is home to many different people from all over the planet.  Our Folklorama festival is a celebration of our diversity and visitors come from all over to attend.  At any given day you can try out food from around the world in one of our blossoming restaurants.  The culinary scene in Manitoba is starting to gain international recognition and it’s no wonder why.

Saving the best for last, I want to mention our amazing Indigenous community here in Manitoba.  I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Elders, Medicine men, beading masters and Chiefs who share their knowledge and wisdom openly.  I’ve had the pleasure of attending sacred ceremonies and drum circles which shook me to the core and made me a better person.  We are truly lucky to be able to learn and grow with our Indigenous community and I look forward to seeing what we can cultivate together.

All in all: I love “Winterpeg, Manisnowba” and I’ll sing it loud and proud wherever this life takes me.

XOXO Lennard Taylor
