Love Letters to Manitoba

Manitoba Runs on Love

You don’t sleep in on Father’s Day in Winnipeg. No, you get up with the sun, which rises at 5:20 a.m., drive to a parking lot, crowd onto a yellow school bus and head to the University of Manitoba.

You do it for love – love of running, love of family, love of community. It all pours out onto the streets around Investors Group Field as thousands of runners gather for the 7 a.m. start of the annual Manitoba Marathon.

Proud parents watch their toddlers dash off in mini races, fathers join their young daughters for the super run, other runners take on distances from 10 km to a half marathon to the full 42.2-kilometre marathon, relay teams string out across the city, each member waiting their turn to run.

It’s a race, sure, but more than that it’s a celebration, an outpouring of community love.

I’ve felt some of my proudest moments as part of it – as a father running with his daughter in her first real race, as a team member helping my gym place well in the relay, as a runner greeted by cheering strangers.

Two quick stories:

I have lived across Canada and run regularly for the past 45 years. I’ve run marathons over the cobblestones of Quebec City, through the cozy streets of Stockholm and past a million spectators on the sidewalks of Chicago.

Exciting? Sure. But not what I feel as a Manitoba runner.

Love means commitment and Manitoba runners have it in spades. The Manitoba Runners’ Association is celebrating 50 vibrant years of supporting running year-round in one of the coldest places you can live. There are organized races on the coldest day in January and on the hottest day in August. And people show up, running in temperatures from -35C to +35C, a bigger range than anywhere in the world. They’re tough, durable and stubborn. Their love is tried, tested and true.

I feel it every time I run down Wellington Crescent, every time I race in Assiniboine Park, every time I stand at the start of the Manitoba Marathon.

So, here’s to Manitoba runners and all the people who organize, volunteer and cheer at races and provide an outlet for all this passion. I love you too.
