U & Me ; Union Station!

Union Station, Winnipeg - Supplied

Most people call you the VIA Rail Station, but I know and love you for being the Union Station!

A staple in my day, you were constructed between 1908 and 1911.

More facts about you:

You were built as a joint venture between the Canadian Northern Railway, National Transcontinental, Grand Trunk Pacific Railway and the Dominion government.

The first train to enter your glorious platfom did so on 7 August 1911, with the official opening the following year on 24 June 1912.

You were designed by Warren and Wetmore, the architects responsible for Grand Central Terminal in New York City. Designed in the Beaux-Arts style and constructed from local Tyndall limestone, you were one of Western Canada's largest railway stations.

You're 110 metres long, with your beautiful entrance close to the intersection of Main Street and Broadway,  under a decorative iron canopy that projects from the austere white limestone!! So amazing!!

In 2011 you had a wee facelift. It's okay to talk about it. We all need a boost sometime, my love! Your spendor was just re-amplified! And besides, it's what's INSIDE that really counts!!

You have greeted thousands of immigrants, you housed the regional office of the Canadian National Railway, you had at one time several trans-border trains to Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota operating out of the station.

The Great Northern Railway had its Winnipeg Limited, while the Northern Pacific Railway also had an unnamed day train. Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie Railroad had its Winnipeger, which did not ever show itself to you, terminating at Canadian Pacific's station on Higgins Avenue up until its discontinuance in 1967. All of these services were discontinued prior to Amtrak and there are no present plans to reinstate any of them.

Canadian National Railway turned over passenger rail services to Via Rail in 1978. At present, you still have your two VIA trains - the Toronto-Vancouver Canadian, and the Winnipeg – Churchill train.

The joy you bring to so many people every day is unmeasurable, the memories made of tearful goodbyes and clutching hellos, wistful waves and continual stability is remarkable.

And so I thank you, my Union Station.

Until I see you tomorrow,

Yours always,

Tara
