Love Letters to Manitoba

Home Away From Home

Home Away From Home. No photo name credit needed. - Supplied

During the 1970s, my war objector husband and I appreciatively found a home in Manitoba as landed immigrants. It was an exciting time to live in Winnipeg! The downtown was vibrant! A building boom was going on: Richardson Building, Winnipeg Art Gallery, Centennial Concert Hall and Manitoba Museum, Royal Canadian Mint, Winnipeg Convention Centre. It didn’t take us long to love Manitoba!

Unlike war objectors in Toronto, Vancouver, or Montreal, war objectors in prairie provinces typically did not live in a neighborhood of U.S. exiles. Instead, we became part of the Winnipeg community. We found jobs, lived in various neighborhoods, bought a home, celebrated Canadian holidays, toured historic Lower Fort Garry, marveled at the Nonsuch, explored Riding Mountain National Park, and shopped at Polo Park, The Bay, and Eaton’s. We discovered pierogis, smoked Lake Winnipeg Goldeye, and Salisbury House “nips.” We read the Winnipeg Free Press and the Winnipeg Tribune, and the University of Winnipeg’s innovative “University at Noon” program introduced us to Canadian history and literature. We cheered on the Grey Cup and were mystified by curling. We enjoyed the Rainbow Stage in Kildonan Park, had RWB and RMTC season tickets, annually “toured” Folklorama, and attended the first Winnipeg Folk Festival at Bird’s Hill Provincial Park. We went cross-country skiing in winter, and came to realize that when the BDI opens, it meant it was finally spring! Most significantly, we made lifelong Canadian friends.

Although no longer living in Manitoba, we remain grateful that individuals in Manitoba, the Canadian Council of Churches, the Mennonite Church in Canada, and university student organizations supported monetarily, emotionally, empathetically, and with direct services (housing, food, transportation) the mission of the Winnipeg Committee to Assist War Objectors and C.R.Y.P.T./Klinic during that tumultuous era. Blessed are the peacemakers…

As I write this, I’m looking forward to the border re-opening and being able to be in Manitoba again this summer to visit friends, view the Winnipeg Art Gallery’s new Qaumajuq addition, make a stop at the BDI, and join with you in celebrating Manitoba 150.
