A Hallmark Love Story

My In-laws - Supplied
Erik & I - Supplied

I have always been a sucker for a good love story and I enjoy Hallmark movies more than I care to admit. Never did I expect for my life to turn into one though. Let me start with a little back story!

My favourite part about Manitoba summers are all the fairs and festivals it offers. I'd drive out to one every single weekend if I could! All the happy smiles and food trucks are my favourite! 3 years ago I found myself looking for a job in the beginning of the year. My local radio station was hiring someone to be a summer events host and drive around to all the fairs and festivals in southern Manitoba. There was absolutely no other way I wanted to spend my summer.

I started the job in early May and it was just the best. Once I'd been trained a little more and got more comfortable talking on the radio, they sent my off to my first solo event: Rumble In The Valley in Morris, MB. I was super excited but just as nervous.

I set up my booth and began writing my radio speech. Soon, 2 people who had a little too much to drink at the beer gardens, came over to talk. It wasn't a comfortable situation and the group of bikers a few booths over noticed. They came over, escorted the 2 people away, and hung around me to keep me feeling safe. I ended up meeting the ambassador of the group and his wife. He introduced himself as Reaper which was his road name. He told me about the group who were called Guardians Of The Children (GOC). Reaper was kind enough to speak on the radio with me and told me about what GOC does, and we had a great conversation afterwards. He told me about his son and said I should date him. "You'd be perfect for each other" he said. I wasn't interested in dating at the time so I said "No, thank you."

One year later, I was invited to a friend's wedding. She told me to bring a wedding date but I didn't know of anyone to bring. Someone suggested Tinder and so I gave it a try. My profile said I was only looking for a wedding date, that I was loyal, and wouldn't steal food off your plate.

I had a fair share of applicants but nobody stood out as much as Erik. He was a bull rider. Dark hair, blue eyes, tall, and had a chiseled jaw line. Erik and I met for coffee a few weeks before the wedding to make sure things wouldn't be awakward. We hit it off. We sat and talked until after midnight. I was smitten and I knew I no longer wanted him only as a date to a friend's wedding. He asked me out again before the wedding and we went for ice cream. My parents met him at the wedding and they right away asked him to come for Thanksgiving dinner the next day and Erik agreed.

3 months of us dating pass and we headed to pick up a few things at Costco. He received a message from his parents saying they were at the Costco entrance. I was excited to meet his parents but was nervous at the same time. As we walked over to the door we ran across Reaper and his wife who had saved me at Rumble in the Valley a year before. We hugged and talked a little and then I looked over at my boyfriend who was as white as a ghost. He looked back and forth between us and then back at me and asks "How do you know my parents?"

Mic Drop

The man who had told me to date his son a year earlier couldn't stop laughing. He was so proud of himself and everyone was shocked beyond belief. His smile was bigger than anyone else's in all of Costco that day.

All thanks to my love of Manitoba's fairs and festivals, I found the love of my life and now have the greatest in-laws in the world!

It's sometimes unbelievable how a little magic and waiting for the right moment can completely change your life for the better.
