École Sun Valley School - Canadian Oil

Canadian Oil

Do you know where canola was created? In the 1970’s, Baldur R. Stefansson and Keith Downey, who were scientists at the University of Manitoba, created canola from another plant. The name comes from the words “Canadian” and “oil”. They got rid of the erucic in rapeseed which can be poisonous to peoples’ hearts, if they have a lot of it. Canola is the third most popular oil. The plant is 4 feet tall, has tiny black or brown seeds in the pods and has yellow flowers. They squish the seeds to make oil. They feed the leftovers to the cows, horses, sheep, pigs and chickens. Canola oil is great because it is healthier for you because it has lots of vitamin E and no cholesterol. It also makes baked goods moist. Bees like the nectar from canola flowers. 80% of the honey in Canada comes from canola nectar. It is also Manitoba’s most important oil seed crop. It is the most planted crop in Manitoba, wheat is second, and soya beans are third. Now you know canola was created at the University of Manitoba.
