Jets blown out in Buffalo

BUFFALO – The Winnipeg Jets lost 5-1 to the Buffalo Sabres on Monday night as their modest one-game winning streak came to an embarrassing end.
Buffalo scored three times in the first period and never looked back, chasing starting goaltender Eric Comrie from the game. Thomas Milic came on in relief and allowed two goals over the final 40 minutes.
Kyle Connor scored the lone goal for Winnipeg.
The Jets fall to 13-12-0 and have now lost nine of their last 13 games. Buffalo improves to 11-11-4.
Winnipeg wraps up its five-game road trip against Montreal on Wednesday night.
Northbound St. James Bridge closed Sunday

The northbound St. James Bridge will be closed for maintenance from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
The closure is from Academy Road to Portage Avenue. The southbound bridge will remain open.
The City of Winnipeg recommended in a news release Monday that drivers plan an alternate route.
Window smashed, money stolen from West End church

City police have a suspect in custody after money was stolen from a West End church Sunday night.
Police responded to an alarm at the church, located on the 1000 block of Ellice Avenue, at about 10:30 p.m. They found a basement window had been broken and a donation box damaged inside, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Monday.
Investigators learned a suspect ran away shortly before they arrived. A police helicopter and canine unit were dispatched to help track the suspect, who was located on the 900 block of Dominion Street about an hour later, the WPS said.
Officers arrested Nicholas Richard Grandbois, 44, and seized cash from him, police said. He is charged with break-and-enter and theft. Grandbois also had an existing warrant for failing to attend court, the WPS said.
McPhillips Street hotel clerk threatened, robbed at gun point

Police are investigating after four armed suspects robbed a Winnipeg hotel early Monday morning.
Officers were called to the business, located on the 1-99 block of McPhillips Street, around 2 a.m., where they learned the group of suspects had entered the lobby wearing masks and carrying handguns. During the robbery, the suspects threatened a front desk employee, damaged property and broke into a cash register, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release.
The group fled from the hotel with an undisclosed amount of money. Nobody was injured, WPS said.
Police have not arrested any suspects. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Major Crimes Unit at 204-986-6219 or anonymously at Crime Stoppers 204-786-8477 (TIPS) or winnipegcrimestoppers.org.
Comedian Atsuko Okatsuka coming to casino

Taiwanese-born standup comedian Atsuko Okatsuka is bringing her The Big Bowl Tour to Club Regent Event Centre on March 14.
The American performer known for her sleek bowl cut was raised in Japan and spent seven years living as an undocumented immigrant in the U.S. Her debut HBO comedy special, The Intruder, was named best debut of 2022 by the New York Times. She is a popular podcast guest who recently made headlines by posting the restrictions demanded by the Riyadh Comedy Festival in Saudi Arabia, after turning down an offer to perform there.
Tickets, starting at $49, go on sale Friday, Dec. 5, at 10 a.m. at Ticketmaster.ca. The show is 18+.
Youth arrested after threat about elementary school made online

A youth has been arrested after online threats were made against an elementary school in Langruth, a town in the rural municipality of Lakeview.
The Sandy Bay detachment of the Manitoba First Nations Police Service were made aware of an online threat made against Langruth Elementary School Saturday and contacted the school administration. A young person was arrested that same day and released on a court order. The youth, whose age was not provided by police, will appear in court at a later date.

Fire in Sydney Avenue home extinguished

A fire broke out at a home on Sydney Avenue late Sunday night.
The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was sent to the 500 block shortly after 10:45 p.m. and declared the fire under control shortly after 11:30 p.m. The people in the house got out safely.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
