Hey there, time traveller!

I have just begun cycling to work and I am already concerned. I am a young female cyclist (also small) and I do not feel safe on the road.
One serious problem is that cars drive by extremely quickly without giving enough space. If you can't move into the next lane, please at least slow down. Another concern is being yelled at in a derogatory manner. Yes, that does happen; in fact it happened to me today.
It does not leave one feeling safe or wanted on the road. I understand there are some reckless cyclists, but that is no reason to put other cyclists' lives in danger or berate them. If police are giving cyclists tickets for riding on the sidewalk, I would really like to see motorists given tickets for speeding up while driving very close to cyclists and for yelling at and berating cyclists.
Maybe it would be useful to think about how you would feel in that cyclist's position or imagine a loved one cycling on that road. We all just want to feel respected and safe on the road and I don't think that's too much to ask.
