Downtown dilemmas diverse
Re: Solving the bogeyman problem (Aug. 12). Why is it that in mayoral races all I seem to hear are these lofty promises for future action? Plans for things that are usually not even in the mayor's power to make happen. With so many issues that require immediate attention, I would think that the candidate that addresses these with solutions would be the frontrunner. I guess deficit, budget, and corruption aren't as sexy as new this and new that, but come on, I can't believe the people of Winnipeg are that naive.

I agree with a lot of Dan Lett's column. But the main problem with street people downtown is not poverty but substance abuse. In many cases that substance abuse is the root of broader mental-health issues. And while we should be compassionate in dealing with the drunks and mentally unhealthy, that does not mean we need to condone harassment of other citizens. Cross-cultural community engagement is a good thing, but it won't get drunks off the streets if unchallenged aggressive pan-handling gives people the money they need for their next fix or bottle.

Dan Lett is certainly entitled to his perception that downtown is safe. I worked right near Portage and Main for years. I perceive it to be unsafe. While some of the people accosting other people for handouts may not be an "extreme risk," people should be able to walk around downtown without people asking for money or cigarettes.
Portage and Main's problems
Re: A vow to open marquee corner (Aug. 12). I have seen my fair share of near-misses on Portage Avenue because pedestrians do not obey the walk signals indicating whether it is safe to cross the street.
Opening up Portage and Main is an accident waiting to happen.
Priorities, Brian... and this isn't one of them. If I had a choice to cross Portage and Main and one was inside and the other outside, I'd take the inside route. It's not like there is anything interesting to see at Portage and Main.
Open the damn thing so we can be like every other city in the world.
