Re: Adopted deer shot and killed (Feb. 6). Please tell me that we are missing some critical details in the story of the euthanized fawn at the local Hutterite colony. Surely, no trained Manitoba Conservation officer could have shown such utter insensitively and complete lack of judgment under these stated circumstances and in the face of these residents.
If this story is factually true, and we persist in setting these ham-fisted, uniformed jugheads loose in the province, please, Gord Mackintosh, do not arm them with anything more than toenail clippers or Swiss Army Knives.

The misuse of the word "euthanasia" bothers me. The dictionary defines "euthanasia" as the practice of permitting the death of hopelessly sick or injured persons or animals in a relatively painless way for reasons of mercy.
Bambi was not hopelessly sick or injured. There was no merciful reason for killing him and he was not killed in a painless way. I feel very sad and angry that our tax dollars funded this horrific and heartless act.
I understand that this was a wild animal that could have become dangerous when the age of maturity is reached. But to shoot it in front of the people who had rescued him, cared for him and treated him like their pet? Unacceptable.
This is a tough situation, but the approach by Manitoba Conservation should have been much different. Maybe taking him to a zoo was a possibility, or at least tranquillizing the deer and have it euthanized off site, if that was the only option.
I read with great disappointment at how Manitoba Conservation continues to not anticipate how the public will react to people who hurt innocent animals. Do they not debrief over any of the incidents that have happened in the past where the public fallout has been huge?
If the latest casualty of their callous thinking needed to be put down, could there not have been a more humane and less visible way of accomplishing this?
