One of the more insidious health risks arising from vehicle use is particulate matter. One of the sources of these fine particles is the wear from tires. In addition, the latex component in some tires which becomes airborne with traffic has been linked to allergenic responses in some people. Tires are a mix of a variety of toxic compounds such as N-isopropyl-N-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine and N-tert-butyl-2-beothiozolesulfenamide, which can leach into aquatic environments with negative effects. Tire wear residues also contain zinc and cadmium, particularly toxic chemicals.
The idea of combining tire crumb with asphalt to put on Winnipeg roads is pretty much consistent with the concern that the Katz and Doer governments have for environmental health.
