How lucky we are

While combing through websites and emails to compile the events listings, I was struck by how busy the calendar is this week.

Theatre, dance, music of all kinds — at venues large and small — comedy, film, Halloween and harvest activities, farmers’ markets, sporting events…

There’s a cursewording amount of stuff going on, and all this activity isn’t about to slow down. In six weeks it’ll be December, and the holiday season and all its attendant pressure to get out and enjoy (and spend) will be upon us before we know it.

Perhaps I’m still partially in pandemic-mode (or maybe I’m just old) but I was almost overwhelmed by the array of options. I don’t think I’m alone, either — especially considering that we’re all facing a cost-of-living crunch which affects our disposable income. At the same time, performing arts organizations, event producers and show promoters are anxious to begin earning income they lost during the pandemic — which makes sense, since programming activities and events is how they survive, and how they intend to recover.

Supplied photoThe Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s Canadian premiere of Snow White, which ran from Sept. 28 to Oct. 1, opened its 2023-24 performance season. This year’s culture and events calendar is jam-packed with options.

In the past 10 days, though, Winnipeggers have received dollars-and-cents reminders that recovery for the performing arts and events sector has not been, and will not be, immediate. First the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra reported a $1.3 million loss on its 2022-23 operations then, five days later, Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet reported a $520,000 deficit for the same time period. I’m also aware of other, smaller arts and cultural organizations which have reported losses for the same fiscal year.

None of the organizations I mentioned are in danger of failing, as they anticipated and budgeted for these results — but their sustainability and recovery plans won’t last forever. The news of the past couple of weeks was a reminder to me that, in times of crisis, the spaces and places where people come together to celebrate their communities through sport and dance and song and theatre — and all the many other ways we remind ourselves that we are human and we are not alone — are often the first to close and the last to re-open.

We’re lucky to have them, and they need our support.
