How does it feel?

Today is Blue Monday, supposedly the saddest and most depressing day of the year.

The designation isn’t clinical — its origins have been traced to a U.K. travel company likely looking to sell a few vacation packages to sunny Spain and Portugal. Still, it’s not hard to see why the middle of January in the northern hemisphere can seem rather bleak (nor is it difficult to fathom why many people may see today, of all days this winter, as particularly gloomy.)

Winnipeg arts and entertainment programmers and producers have known this for years, of course. Brightening up our coldest months with exciting contemporary new music is one of the reasons former WSO artistic director Bramwell Tovey and composer-in-residence Glenn Buhr launched the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra’s New Music Festival in 1992. This year’s version of what is now known as the Winnipeg New Music Festival — the 34th (which is hard to believe) — opens Tuesday at Centennial Concert Hall.

Another, newer music and arts festival, Winterruption 2025, also opens tomorrow. A co-production of the West End Cultural Centre and Real Love Winnipeg, this festival is part of a network of Winterruption festivals in Saskatoon, Regina and Edmonton, which enables the producers to offer performers shows in each city — helping people beat the winter blues across Western Canada.
