What have you been into?

Some of you have asked, so here’s what I’ve been listening to, reading and watching lately:

Listening: I recently reviewed the new albums by Horsegirl and Lilly Hiatt for the Free Press. Horsegirl is a trio of young women from Chicago who relocated to New York City a few years ago so that two of could attend New York University, and Phonetics On and On is a deceptively quiet album of stripped-down, low-key indie rock with sweet melodies and incisive lyrics; John Hiatt’s daughter, on the other hand, has made a buzzing, Stonesy rock ’n’ roll record called Forever with her husband, guitarist/producer Coley Hinson. I hope to see Hiatt and Hinson play these songs live this year, as theywill undoubtedly bring the heat. This week I’m looking forward to digging into Jason Isbell’s new solo acoustic album, Foxes in the Snow. The Americana superstar (if there can be such a thing) is always an honest songwriter, unafraid to bare his soul, and early reports suggest that these songs dig into his split from Amanda Pearl Shires, and that he also sings about finding new love with Canadian painter Anna Weyant.

Reading: Sally Rooney’s fourth novel, Intermezzo, was a surprisingly exquisite recent read. No one writes interior monologue/conflict/anxiety quite like this young Irish author, and her tales of millennials adjusting to life as young adults are well worth the time. Her second book, Normal People (2018), was turned into a marvellous mini-series by the BBC, but if you want to dig into her canon, you should really start at the beginning, with 2017’s Conversations with Friends. It’ll remind you of your indecisive, angst-fuelled student days — when you tried on people, ideas and ideals like clothing at a second-hand shop. Before that, I read Adrian McKinty’s entire series of novels featuring Northern Irish detective Sean Duffy, whose exploits during ‘the Troubles’ were a shockingly realistic re-examination of the era.

Watching: I’m in the middle of season three of Babylon Berlin at the moment – and it’s gripping – but I’m really here to testify on behalf of its platform. MHz + Choice and Topic is the rather unwieldy name (the result of a merger) and it is the one-stop North American shop for European crime shows. My 87-year-old father recommended it last fall, and so far I’ve watched all eight seasons of a French series called Spiral (Engrenages), a procedural set in Paris which follows the exploits of an elite squad of detectives while offering a unique insight into various aspects of French judicial system; and season one of Fallen (Sanningen), a Swedish crime drama starring Sofia Helin, who played the lead in Swedish/Danish co-production The Bridge (Bron), a show so good it was remade for both the U.K. and the U.S. markets (imitation being the sincerest form of flattery).

What have you been enjoying this winter? Let me know at john.kendle@freepress.mb.ca

Have a great week, folks. I’ll be back in your inboxes on Monday, March 17, with details of all the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations I can find. (Be warned: a lot of places are running their St. Paddy’s Day promotions this coming weekend.)
