Small Business Week is a time to celebrate the entrepreneurs, innovators, and community builders who keep Manitoba’s economy thriving. Here in Waverley, small businesses are the heart of our neighbourhoods — creating jobs, supporting local causes, and providing the services that make our community such a vibrant place to live.

This year, I had the opportunity to mark Small Business Week, which was Oct. 19 to 25, by highlighting several local businesses that showcase the creativity and diversity of Waverley.

At South Park Clinic, health and community truly come together. The clinic’s dedicated team provides high-quality, patient-centred care right here in the south end, ensuring families can access the services they need close to home. I had the chance to visit the clinic recently and spend some time with Dr. Jahanzeb Ansari, whose work reflects the commitment and expertise that make clinics such as South Park so vital. Local providers like Dr. Ansari play an essential role in strengthening primary care and supporting the well-being of our community.

Essentials Bazar is a cultural haven offering a rich collection of products that reflect traditions from around the world. Located on Centre Street, the shop invites visitors to explore a global marketplace without leaving the city. The owners’ commitment to quality and cultural connection makes Essentials Bazar a true gem in our community.

Empty Cup is one of the Waverley community’s favourite little spots. Known for its great coffee, tea, and snacks, this locally owned café offers a warm, welcoming place to relax or get a bit of work done. Small businesses such as Empty Cup add so much character to our community and truly make it feel like home.

Nearby, Arctic Dessertz is bringing something entirely unique to Winnipeg — premium ingredients and a menu inspired by the beauty and purity of the Arctic wilderness. Every dish and drink celebrates freshness, creativity, and the spirit of northern hospitality.

Finally, Affinity Dental, a practice that goes beyond routine care by focusing on overall wellness. Their friendly, professional team provides personalized dental solutions that help patients achieve healthy, confident smiles while feeling genuinely cared for.

Tuesday, Oct. 21 was Take Your MLA to Work Day, part of Disability Employment Awareness Month. This initiative connects MLAs with Manitobans with disabilities who are thriving in inclusive workplaces. It’s an inspiring reminder that when we build accessible, welcoming environments, our whole community benefits.

From health care to hospitality, retail to restorative care, the businesses and workers in Waverley embody the spirit of resilience and innovation that defines Manitoba. During Small Business Week and beyond, let’s continue to support and celebrate them.
